I've come two years in a row now while staying nearby. This is a nice place, but I really wouldn't be bothered to drive here from somewhere else unless the tiny view of the ocean is really important to you. I say tiny because you can't really see the beach, just the water. I would only come here if you were already staying at one of the hotels nearby and can walk here. They have a huuuuge selection of burgers to choose from and have a couple of other things on their menu. Be wary of "special" ingredients that only appear on the menu once- for instance, the pimento cheese. You don't know how long it takes them to use of the container of that ingredient if it's only used for one dish out of many- some places will continue to use an ingredient for weeks and weeks instead of throwing it out and using a fresh one. The food is pretty tasty here, and you can munch on complimentary peanuts. So, on that note, this is NOT a safe place for peanut allergy sufferers, as it can be on any surface including the floor, tables, chairs etc. The walls are decorated with old license plates and it's fun to look around while you're waiting for your food. The waitstaff are generally pretty friendly. It's a chill place to get something to eat on the beach, but it's nothing extravagant. There is also NO outdoor table service, but you can order something to go and eat it at Ocean Annie's, the pool, or the beach, as many people did.

Not sure what all the hype is about. I will have to agree their selection of burgers is phenomenal but the service lacked energy and later on at night our tummies told us never to eat there again! However, the paper on the table is awesome when you have kids as they thinks it's the coolest thing to draw all over the table.

I like the food, it taste ok. My only complaint is that the prices are not comparable to the quality of the food. The competition is high in this industry, so you've got to stand out. Unfortunately, River City Cafe just doesn't. I like the atmosphere, but that alone won't keep me going back.

The Blooming Onion was so delicious! After hearing various people around the pool rave about the pizza and burgers from the cafe, we decided to check it out on our last night in town. I wish we had went sooner so we could have made several visits. The menu had a huge variety of burgers that all made my mouth water. Unfortunately we had to leave abruptly during dinner due to an emergency, but our server Adam was very accommodating making our exit very quick. We will be back again!

Food and service were top notch. Brian our waiter was friendly, helpful and attentive to our party of 8. The beers were ice cold and the kids enjoyed the free refills on there sodas or lemonades. Appetizers were very good, tried the fried green beans and Tai chili wings. Both were enjoyed by all. The burgers are loaded and good size. Prepare to enjoy and get a little messy. The choices are numerous and there were no complaints from our group. The atmosphere is a laid back beach bar with simple and local decor which can discourage some but it would be there loss for not staying. The place is a must try for great burgers.

Fantastic attentive service and the best burger I've had in while!

Great burgers, wings, and fried fare. Ordered from cell in room at Sands and food was ready in 10 minutes. Ate inside another time during the week and the food was solid. Beer was cold and staff was friendly. Overlooks pool area at Sands Ocean Club.

*i posted this on Urbanspoon, only to have them delete it immediately, with no concern to address the issue. So be cautious when eating their burgers, it appears that the beef has been mishandled. If they are deleting reviews so quickly, this probably isn't the first time it's happened. * My girlfriend and I checked this place out since it was a slow night and only a quarter mile from where we were staying. The burger selection was pretty unique and that's what drew us to it more than anything. She got the Texas BBQ burger and I got the BLT burger. We also shared an onion ring order. Everything was delicious and we were very satisfied with our meal. Then we went to bed...we both woke up around 4am with very bad stomach pain that lead to long bathroom sessions and vomiting. There is absolutely no way that something else could have caused this, as the only other thing we both ate that day was a donut each from DD around 9am. There was a table of 10 rowdy guys all heavily drinking sitting near us, most of which all ate burgers. I hope that if they were sharing rooms, that there were enough toilets to go around.

Saw the good reviews on this place and liked the looks of the menu, so decided to give it a try. This place is VERY HARD to find! It is located within a hotel and has a tiny sign for the cafe. Had to get permission to park in the hotel lot. Was a hassle to find the place and a hassle to park. Ordered a turkey burger with pesto & avocado. Was juicy and good. A little heavy on the pesto. Service was pretty quick. I liked the fries as well. I would consider coming back but might search for another place first.

River City Cafe is A-OK, but I think benefits most from it's location in the Ocean Sands resort area right on the beach. A lot of people get their food to go and take it over to Ocean Annie's or out on the beach. I went their twice on a long weekend visit to MB. One time, was for lunch and we sat down. I ordered the shrimp po-boy and the order took way too long to be delivered considering it was lunch time and they weren't terribly busy. The po-boy was good though. The fries were decent at best. The second time I went in the evening and got a burger. I think the people who say these are the best burgers in the world had been drinking on the beach all day. Actually, I had been drinking on the beach all day too, but found my palmetto burger to be just ok. I liked the pimento cheese, but thought the burger was a bit hard and over-cooked. The onion rings were very good though. A better choice than getting the fries. I will probably continue to come to River City Cafe when staying at Ocean Sands because it's a decent beach place and very convenient.

OMG!...so good. We went two days in a row! I had the chicken philly and my husband had (1) pizza burger..delicious. (2) shrimp burger with chilli glaze. Service was great too! It's a great beach side restaurant.

AMAZING Burgers and a huge selection of unique and traditional toppings. I got the Three-Alarm burger and it was hands down the best "spicy" burger I've gotten anywhere. My husband got the Carolina Chilli Cheeseburger and he devoured it. We also shared onion rings and sweet potato fries, both of which were very good. River City is cheap too! I ordered a cocktail, my husband got a soda and everything above came to $35! Definitely going to make it a regular stop when we visit Myrtle Beach!

Have been going to this place every year while on vaca- it's such good food and super easy for us when we want to do a take in night (we stay at ocean/sand dunes) always on point and always satisfied! GET THE ONION RINGS!

  • Sonya Y.

What more can you ask for? It's on the beach, causal, hamburgers, chicken, fish, sweet tea, alcohol and available for take out!! We love sitting on the beach outside at Sands and whatever the mood you can run in and grab a bite or get it to go. What could make it even better? Online or text to-go ordering. Would be great to order and then just pickup but definitely worth waiting in restaurant for your order.

You never know what to expect here some days it's packed some days it's empty. But you know what you can expect? The most wildish and amazing burgers in town. They have one burger called the OMG burger, and everything on it sounds like a fat guys dream food. From grilled cheese buns, bacon, eggs, etc. God, I'll do it one day but I don't know if I can handle it yet. You should give this place a try.

The burgers are great! The Kitchen Sink burger is enough for two! The service was disturbingly slow since my mom and I were the only ones there. I was prepared to give three stars until the manager came out and apologized for the wait. He said that we came in right behind a massive to-go order that slowed his kitchen staff down. That kind of ownership is rarely seen anymore so i was happy to give them the star back!

I like this place! it fits in next to Annie's because Annie does not serve food! So it was good to have a burger and then a pitcher next door! The burger was very good! I had the Rancho! I do not recommend the fries...i don't know what everyone is talking about with those!! it was like hollow crispy fries with no taste! They do have free nuts and the waitress that was at the order out counter was pretty funny. She made me a margarita and my gf a mudslide...They were pretty good! So def try this place for a burger...you dont have to pay the extra $2.50 for fries...not worth it!

I found River City Cafe on yelp because the boys in my group wanted burgers. The menu is pretty extensive, and the best part for me was that you could swap out beef for turkey or veggie if you wanted to. I got the three alarm fireburger. It was tasty but I wish it was spicier! Two of the guys got a double burger, and those things were massive. We also got onion rings and fries for the table, and the fries were fresh cut and nicely salted. The onion rings were the size of our heads which is fun to look at, but a bit difficult to eat. River City has a very casual atmosphere with peanuts, license plates, and random decorations everywhere. Quick tip: parking is on the street and it's metered, but the host let us know that we could park in a private lot across the street for free.

Food is good, prices are cheap and service is good. What more can you ask for. I'm a person who does not eat meat on Mondays and I had atleast 17 choices in entrees. So you can guess how good this place is. 3 stars for the food and 1 star for the service. I was not re-served water until it was "Check" time. It is a Cafe, what can you expect. The quantity was not enough though.

Really great. Love that you can eat it to go next door and have drinks by the beach. Huge portions. Good ranch dressing!

Went to River City Cafe with my family during a day trip to Myrtle Beach. Its a small place, with license-plate covered walls, and a slippery peanut-shell covered floor. I had the turkey Nacho Crunch Burger. It was probably the best turkey burger that i've ever had in a restaurant. Usually turkey burgers are "blah". This one was well seasoned, and was delicious with the toppings. I ordered the platter which came with cole slaw and fries. Fries were good, but I only had a couple of them. I think next time, I will just eat fries off of my husband's plate and save the 1.99. My mom complained that she thought the place was grimey. That didn't bug me much..but if you are someone who likes thngs really clean..this might not be the place for you.

"Burger-vana" tucked into an almost impossible-to-find poolside location in the Sands Resort on Shore Drive a mile south of Restaurant Row. Unassuming and a bit gritty on the outside, the staff shouts out to-go order names and the place has peanut shells all over the floor (sorry allergy sufferers). But the burger choices are astounding, and the food itself was astoundingly good. I had the Nacho Crunch Burger, with Doritos (don't knock em til you try em), jalapenos, onion, pepperjack cheese and guacamole. Impressive taste combination. The burgers can be made from beef, turkey, chicken or vegan choices...wonderful for those who may be cutting back on the cow. The decor is nothing special, license plates and booths and tables with butcher paper covering them, but with lots of choice, tasty sides, like fresh-cut fries and large onion rings, and attentive friendly service, we would be willing to try other locations of this Myrtle Beach staple. Maybe they'll be a bit easier to find. A star taken off for the hotel hall-maze location and the lack of free parking in the front lot. Luckily, we were staying down the road so we walked. If you are not as lucky, try a location near a large shopping center or off of Rte. 17. The burgers are indeed worth the walk. And you might be glad you walked some of it off!

Dang! Why did I check out this place twice on the same trip? Because the first time was so awesome! I got the chili cheese burger with the slaw on it. It was so good that I devoured it in about one minute. We also ordered the fried zucchini, The zucchini was cut thicker than we expected, but I still loved it. The service was amazing and we were never without anything. I usually gently try to suggest other places when my in-laws want to revisit restaurants on the same trip, but because everything was so excellent, I let it slide. That was not the best idea. This time the service was horrible! It took a while for a server to find us and help us, I ordered the burger only but was served the platter and there was no one to report it back to, and our drinks were empty most of our meal. I got the nacho crunch burger. It was good, but not as good as the chili cheese burger I got before. If I had only had my first experience, 5 stars all the way, but my second one was was poor so I dropped them down to a 3.

The first time I came here was a 5 star review. I got the RC burger and made it a double. It was fantastic!!!! Food was amazing and service was friendly and fast! Perfect in my book. The second time I went it got a 2 star review. The burger was a double peanutbutter burger add bacon and pickles. The food got a 3 this time and service was a -5. Our drinks were left empty and the food took an hour!!!! They don't ask how you want it cooked, but cook all burgers at medium-well. Which is fine, still juicy and no pink center. The fries are thick-cut and good. If you order onion rings, you only get 2, but they are the size of an entire onion!!! It is hit and miss, but when they hit- it is dead on a great place to get a burger!!!!

This place has some of the most amazing burgers I've ever eaten in my life. I had the R.C. Burger that had chili, bacon, mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, swiss cheese , and cheddar cheese on it. Wow is the only thing I could say because it was that good. It was so good that we ate their two more times on our vacation. Their chili cheese fries were equally amazing. Throw those in with the peanuts and great service and you have a reason to come back. Definately try this place if you get the chance. You wont be sorry.

Great place to get burgers! Love the build your own option. The fries are A-mazing! Order more than you think you'll need :) It can get a bit noisy and crowded during tourist season. Be prepared to wait. The servers are great and the over all experience is fun.

Peanuts on the floor. Check. Awesome burgers. Check. Quick and friendly staff. Check. This is one of those "go ahead and make a royal mess cause we don't care!" type laid back places that has all the license plates on the wall and some of the most colorful patrons anywhere on the east coast. Check it out, and leave your etiquette at the door...

Good LORD, the burgers are to die for!!! I got the Palmetto Burger and added jalapenos! Heaven on Earth!!! Best burgers on the Grand Strand! Don't miss it!!!

I had the burger with fried egg and bacon.....it was incredible! I always get their burgers and fries, but someone else I was with got the wings and said they were terrible. If you get their burgers you cannot go wrong. If you are getting carryout, make sure you are there early. The burgers and fries are juicy, so the longer they sit, the bun and fries will get soggy.

  • Steven L.

The burger was very good, juicy and tasty. And there are a ton of options for your burger toppings. Atmosphere was a casual, peanut shells on the floor, write your name on your booth kind of place. The tea was fantastic, the only reason I give it a four is the fries. They were fresh cut, which is great, but they tasted like the oil may have been a little old. Change your oil more frequently and you get a Five.

Really more of 2.5 stars because giving 2 stars to this place just ain't right. This is more of a wannabe college hang out stuck on the beach. License plates from all over the country plastered on the walls, peanuts instead of chips for freebie munchies, shells on the floor, etc. The food...not overly impressed. Decent burger, but nothing to jump up and down about. Wife's Fish sandwich was good, but again, nothing special. Just a place along the beach to stop in and grab a burger, nothing really more than that.

I've always enjoyed eating at the River City Cafes. They have a variety of very unique burgers that are amazing. You can enjoy the cool summer breeze by eating outside or enjoy the air conditioned inside. They give you a bucket of peanuts when you sit down and expect you to throw the shells on the floor. It's not the most sanitary but it obviously works for most. Will always eat here once when on vacation.

This place was perfect for our loud party of four adults and four kids. The food was surprisingly delicious and expertly delicious. It was a little difficult to find but well worth an extra trip around the block.

This is located in Sands Ocean club. Its okay just to grab something quick. Lots of burgers on the menu. Peanuts everywhere and license plates.

    (2)
  • Michelle B.

The burgers were great! You have the same option of toppings and type of burger, but you can have it with turkey, meatloaf, or beef. The menu had so many options, it was great. The fries were gross, and soggy. Ughhh. You should get there onion rings. I say that if your going to the alabama theatre you should eat dinner there, but get everything except the fries. Plus it's in a nice shopping mall area and it's fun to look around.

Our party of five visited River City Cafe on Shore Drive in late November 2007. Most of our group had hamburgers and fries. We all agreed that we enjoyed our food. Service was attentive. Business was somewhat slow this time of year. We will return to River City Cafe.
